600 Yard Open House
Washoe County Regional Shooting Facility
Hosted by the Palomino Valley Gun Club
July 27, 2019
Shooters and hunters who want to find out what their guns can do at longer ranges are invited to attend an Open House at the Washoe County Shooting Facility on Pyramid Highway. Bring your equipment and shoot at 600 yards. Find out if a long shot during hunting season is possible and ethical by shooting at life size deer and antelope targets. See if your equipment has the precision to shoot long range. Shoot off the ground or from a bench. This is not a match.
Shooters will be shooting at paper targets, either bullseye or NRA life size animal targets, their choice. All shots will be marked as they are shot so the exact location of the shot is known as opposed to shooting a large steel gongs where the sound is the only indication of a hit. No pit duty, just come and shoot.
All people attending must bring eye and ear protection. If you plan to shoot, bring the following:
Rifle and ammunition, 25-30 rounds
Spotting scope or binoculars for spotting your hits
Something to lay on if shooting prone
Adjustable stool if you shoot from the bench
Bipods or other front rest and a rear rest for rifle
Cost is $15 to shoot. Depending on participation, 15-30 minutes will allocated for participants to shoot as many shots they want in the allotted time. The event will start at 8:00 and last until 2:30. Meet at the 600 yard line.
The minimum caliber at 600 yards is .223 with 50 grain bullets. All loads must be supersonic at the pits. No black powder, muzzle loaders, 50 cal., fully automatic weapons or ammunition that would be unsafe shooting at long range are allowed. Any questions on load, calibers and twists can be directed to the contact below. Help will be available to get shooters on target.
